The sign of the fleece:
So Gideon said to God, “If You will save Israel by my hand as You have said – look, I shall put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that You will save Israel by my hand, as You have said.” And it was so. When he rose early the next morning and squeezed the fleece together, he wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water. Then Gideon said to God, “Do not be angry with me, but let me speak just once more: Let me test, I pray, just once more with the fleece; let it now be dry only on the fleece, but on all the ground let there be dew.” And God did so that night. It was dry on the fleece only, but there was dew on all the ground.
Judges 6:36-40 NKJV
The Lord taught me that when Gideon asked God to let there be dew on the fleece, he was basically asking the Lord for confirmation of something that He had already spoken to him about. In Judges 6:14-16 the Lord instructed Gideon to fight against the Midianites to defeat them, because they were continually oppressing Israel. We can see from Scripture that Gideon asked the Lord to give him confirmation of this, which then strengthened his faith. Therefore, the hidden meaning of ‘dew’ within this context of Scripture, is asking the Lord for confirmation of something that He has already spoken to us about. Like Gideon, when we receive confirmation from the Lord, it strengthens our faith so that we can move forward in the direction that the Lord has shown us.
Another interesting observation from this passage of Scripture is that Gideon specifically asked the Lord to let there be dew on a fleece of wool. A fleece of wool is the thick wooly coat which has been shorn off a sheep. Once again, this is not a co-incidence, because there is a beautiful hidden meaning here. The Lord opened my understanding to this recently when He reminded me of the Scripture which tells us that we are His sheep who hear His voice.
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
John 10:27 NKJV
From the passage of Scripture in Judges, we read that Gideon heard the Lord’s voice, but He wanted confirmation so that he could be absolutely sure.
“So Gideon said to God, ‘If You will save Israel by my hand as You have said.” – Judges 6:36 NKJV
As the Lord’s sheep, we all want to hear our Shepherd’s voice because we know that God still speaks to His people today. Just as God showed His faithfulness to Gideon by sending him dew as confirmation, the Lord will also send us confirmation if we ask Him to. God is not offended when we ask for confirmation, because He delights to show us His goodness and faithfulness. Remember that He is a good and loving Father who leads us with patience and gentleness.
Let me also encourage you with this. God’s voice sounds like His written Word. If what we hear aligns perfectly with His Word and His good character, this is a pretty good sign that we have heard from the Lord. Also, the Lord’s peace will always accompany His leading. And if we are lacking the faith we need to move forward, He will confirm His word to us. Thank You Jesus!
Until next time – goodbye and God bless.
