Understanding ‘Give us this day our daily bread’

In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors

And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Matthew 6:9-13 NKJV

In Scripture, Jesus tells us not to worry about what we will eat or what we will wear, because our Father in heaven knows that we are in need of these things. Instead, He helps us shift our focus from material things to spiritual matters by advising us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Matthew 6:31-33 NKJV

There is a promise contained within this Scripture and we know that our Father won’t break His promises, because it goes against His character. Therefore, we have peace in knowing that we don’t have to worry about food, drink and clothing – instead we can focus on eternal spiritual matters – resting in the fact that God will take care of our physical needs.

I believe that this same principle of focusing on spiritual matters can be applied to the Lord’s prayer. Let me explain. Asking the Lord to provide us with our daily bread (Matthew 6:11) contains a hidden spiritual meaning for our understanding. I believe this hidden meaning is that Jesus is wanting us to ask our Father to give us our daily portion of spiritual food contained within the written Word of God.

Daily food is necessary for our physical strength and nourishment, however spiritual food is vital for our spiritual growth and development, as well as to sustain spiritual life. We know that the words of Jesus found within Scripture give us eternal life when we are faithful to obey the Lord in what He has commanded us. I wholeheartedly believe that God is wanting us to consume His written Word daily for our spiritual sustenance.

I have learned by experience that every day we can ask the Lord to give us our daily bread, meaning that we can ask Him to speak to us or give us a message for that day as we read His written Word. The Holy Spirit will draw our attention to either a word, a sentence, or a passage of Scripture that will speak directly into our hearts, or into our current situation. We will just know that God is speaking to us in that moment, and this is how we receive our daily bread.

Thank You Jesus for feeding us with Your precious written Word, and thank You Lord for Your precious Holy Spirit who makes Your Word alive to us and gives us understanding.

If this understanding is new to you, may I kindly encourage you to ask the Lord to give you your daily bread (portion of spiritual food). The Lord is faithful, and He wants to speak to us more than we may realize. Even if you only have a few minutes each day to spend time in the Word of God, make it a priority, knowing that our Father will be faithful to provide for your spiritual nourishment.

May God bless you

Until next time – goodbye
